Customers problems in overall payroll setup process

  • Lack of confidence in compliance heavy area.

  • It takes an average of 10+ days to complete employee setup

  • Confused by complicated interaction and out-dated visuals

Problems in deduction setup

*Deduction is one of most critical payroll information that users need to set up.

Current problem 1

Not able to add/edit multiple deductions on one page

Current problem 2

Not able to refer to other deductions while editing

2 concept options for user testing

Edit inline

  • 😁 Easy to refer to other deductions

  • 😁 Make edits efficiently without switching modes.

  • 😭 Overwhelming info on one page

  • 😭 No clear distinction between edit mode vs. review mode

Edit in drawer

  • 😁 Clear distinction between edit mode vs. review mode

  • 😭 Lose deduction details in review mode

Combine edit mode from 1st concept & review mode from 2nd concept

From 6 user sessions, we learnt that

  • User prefers to edit only 1 deduction at a time.

  • User likes simplified read-only info in review mode

  • User likes the distinction between edit mode & review mode.

Design highlights

Simplified review mode

Customers can manage and review all available deductions in one place.

Edit mode

Allowing customer to focus editing one deduction at a time, while still being able to view other deductions for context.

Localization in Canada

For Canada market that has different regulation requirement, we provide detailed tax setting table to give contextualized tips.

Takeways

I was the lead designer owning the entire payroll setup flow. And I need to cooperate with 3 different engineering teams at the same time, so bridging gaps among various domain teams to keep consistency is the key to success.
